Total including tax
120.00
- Net amount (excl. tax)
- 100.00
- Tax (20%)
- 20.00
Formula
Gross = Net × (1 + Rate ÷ 100)
How it works
Choose Add tax when you have a net price and need the total including VAT, sales tax or GST. Choose Remove tax when you have a price that already includes tax and need the net amount and the tax inside it.
Enter the rate that applies to you — for example 20% standard VAT in the UK, 19% in Germany, 21% in Spain, or your state and local sales tax rate in the US. The calculator works with any currency.
Formula
- Add tax: Gross = Net × (1 + Rate ÷ 100)
- Remove tax: Net = Gross ÷ (1 + Rate ÷ 100)
- Tax = Gross − Net
A common mistake is removing tax by subtracting the rate from the gross price. 20% of 120 is 24, but the tax included in 120 at a 20% rate is 20.
Example
A price of 120 including 20% VAT
- 1Net = 120 ÷ 1.20 = 100
- 2VAT = 120 − 100 = 20
Net 100 and 20 of VAT.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate VAT backwards from a total?
Divide the total by 1 plus the rate. For 20% VAT, divide by 1.2. The difference between the two amounts is the VAT.
Is VAT the same as sales tax?
Both are taxes on sales, and the math to add or remove them is the same. VAT is charged at each stage of production, while US sales tax is charged once at the final sale.
Does it work for GST?
Yes. GST in Australia, Canada, India and other countries is calculated the same way — just enter the GST rate.
